Plymouth Congregational
United Church of Christ
Our Vision…
The Sacred Dance Ministry envisions a community of young people who will know the importance of respecting their bodies, protecting their minds and honoring their spirits.
Our Mission…
To create a worship culture that embraces dance as a form of worship and encourages spiritual development, character building, and community service. The youth of today are full of immense, God-given potential and talent. This ministry seeks to capture, nurture and mentor their potential and empower them to be the best at all they do.
Our Objectives….
To spiritually, mentally and emotionally prepare and equip young people with tools, techniques, and support structures to ensure their success in the world using dance as the medium to achieve this.
To cultivate a way of being that honors the body, mind and spirit by fostering a personal relationship with God.
To create a safe haven where young people are met with love, compassion, and support to grow personally and be productive members of their families, schools, churches and communities.
To offer dance as a gift to congregants, the church’s organizations, and the boarder community.
Our Scriptural Charge… “Calling Us to Greatness”
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and n For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you For and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.
Who can join the dance ministry
The dance ministry is open to members and friends of the congregation, our surrounding community and anyone interested in supporting the mission and objectives of the sacred dance ministry. The ministry is open to boys and girls.
Description of the Sacred Dance Ministry
Under the leadership of Ms. Ronya-Lee Anderson Thompson, Director of Sacred Dance Ministry, members of the dance ministry will learn a number of different dance techniques, including, ballet, modern, African, hip/hop and step. The Director, a highly skilled and talented dancer, instructs the participants with precision, passion, and perfection.
The dance ministry seeks to develop the whole person by building personal confidence in the abilities of the dancers, nurturing their individual talents, and holding them accountable to fully maximizing their potential and immense God –given gifts.
Through practices, devotions, workshops, instructions, and pageantry, our youth will learn many important character-building traits, enhance their overall commitment to personal success and strengthen their interactions with diverse people and situations. The dance program runs all-year round, with a two week break in the summer.
While the Sacred Dance Ministry falls under the leadership of the Board of Christian Education, and is a ministry under the Multicultural and Visual Arts Ministry, it is an integral part of the overall youth programming and therefore, works in concert with the Youth Choir, Youth Group and the Sunday School Department.
